About the course

This programme offers instruction in social, cultural, and political history from the early modern era to the present, with a focus on the British Isles, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and India. It emphasises hands-on historical practice, where students engage with primary sources from the outset, analysing a range of evidence such as written documents, oral accounts, maps, visual images, films, art, and music.Students will explore how sources and media shape interpretations of the past, critically evaluate evolving historical debates, and assess the role of historians in public life, media, and the heritage sector. Through access to the University's archives and records, learners will develop research skills including palaeography, database analysis, project planning, and teamwork. In the first two levels, students may also study complementary humanities or social science subjects, such as economics, English, philosophy, politics, or psychology.
