About the course

Gateway to Medicine is a one-year preparatory course for Scottish residents from widening access backgrounds, designed to facilitate entry into the University’s five-year medicine program. Eligibility details are available on the entry requirements page. Supported by experienced medical staff, a small learning community, buddy systems, peer tutoring, and student societies, participants can achieve their potential and earn a Certificate of Higher Education in Life Sciences for Medicine upon successful completion. High performers gain direct entry to the first year of the medicine course.Based at the University’s City Campus and the School of Medicine at Ninewells Hospital, the curriculum covers topics such as introductory anatomy, the science of life and organisms, and applications of chemistry, maths, and physics to life sciences. Students engage in modules like Orientation to Clinical Skills, which includes patient examination, basic life support, and shadowing medical students, as well as Healthcare in Context, exploring NHS practices in Scotland. Additionally, participants can train as paid healthcare support workers or volunteer, with reflections integrated into their studies.
