About the course

BA (Hons) Media and Sociology explores how identities are constructed through media engagement and how social divisions—such as disability, class, ethnicity, gender, religion, nationality, and sexuality—influence media access and representation. This course integrates practical learning, including writing for journalism, PR, and digital platforms like web content, blogging, and social media. Students develop creativity via media project planning, scriptwriting, digital video, and editing, while applying sociology through placements, community engagement, guest speakers, and study visits. Teaching employs interactive methods, including workshops, news days, work experience, lectures, seminars, field trips, multimedia presentations, online collaboration, and debates, with insights from industry experts. Opportunities extend to sociological tours of Derby and beyond, fostering global perspectives on media dynamics, identity, ethics, and citizenship. Graduates are prepared for careers in politics, content creation, marketing, communications, social media, creative industries, law, and public administration, with transferable research and communication skills applicable to diverse roles.
