About the course

This course addresses contemporary and future challenges by fostering a comprehensive understanding of natural and environmental hazards, including climate change, volcanic eruptions, flooding, and earthquakes, along with strategies for their management, mitigation, and adaptation. It offers a dynamic, multidisciplinary curriculum spanning sciences, physical geography, and human geography. Students will explore Earth's physical, chemical, and biological systems to draw lessons from history, interpret current conditions, and drive sustainable solutions, such as net-zero carbon transitions and resource management. Emphasizing hands-on learning through laboratory work, fieldwork, placements, and research, the programme is delivered by expert, research-active faculty.Learning occurs primarily on campus via lectures, practical labs, tutorials, and computer-based sessions, supplemented by directed study, group activities, and fieldwork in locations like the Peak District. Students will develop essential skills in data analysis for climate sciences, mineral exploration, and green energy using global datasets. Graduates will be equipped for diverse careers in Earth sciences, including volcanology, geophysics, oceanography, carbon capture, and geohazards mitigation, among others.
