Biochemistry with Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, MSci (Hons)

Biochemists explore the molecular foundations of life, enhancing our understanding of human health, disease, and applied fields such as drug discovery, diagnostics, and biotechnology. This Biochemistry MSci course immerses students in cutting-edge research, fostering advanced analytical and problem-solving skills for diverse careers. The curriculum covers topics including molecular genetics, immunology, synthetic biology, enzymology, cancer cell biology, and neurobiochemistry, with options to tailor studies through units in infection, immunity, microbiology, pharmacology, and physiology. Teaching involves lectures, interactive workshops, and tutorials, supported by a personal tutor throughout the degree.The first two years align with BSc programs, emphasizing practical and research skills through laboratory training. In the third year, students engage in a research training unit, culminating in an extended MSci project—up to 16 weeks under expert supervision—to build in-depth expertise. This is complemented by units on Science and Society, plus advanced options like Synthetic Biology or Protein Assemblies. The program prepares graduates for careers via employability sessions and opportunities like summer studentships, leading to paths in PhD programs, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, research, healthcare, and beyond.
