Sociology with Criminology, BSc (Hons)

Sociology focuses on developing theories and concepts to explain the origins and nature of the modern social world, supported by systematically gathered evidence. Its core aim is to equip students with explanatory frameworks applicable to broader society and their future employment settings.The curriculum explores key social issues in contemporary Ireland and globally, including advanced industrial societies, digital society, global development, education, work, conflict, and diversity. Drawing on staff research strengths, it delivers cutting-edge sociological theory through real case studies and robust research training, preparing graduates for diverse careers. As a minor component, Criminology introduces fundamental ideas, theories, and concepts in criminal justice, such as crime, deviance, victims, sentencing, punishment, policing, terrorism, surveillance, and state crime, alongside knowledge of legal institutions for a comprehensive understanding.
