This program combines linguistics with modern languages and cultures, deepening your understanding of language structure while applying it to one or two foreign languages chosen from ten options: German, French, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Czech, Catalan, Italian, or Luxembourgish. You will explore the history, literature, and culture of your selected languages, splitting time between the School of English—offering modules in first/second language acquisition, theoretical linguistics, language and gender, accents, and dialects—and the School of Languages and Cultures, covering visual cultures, literary studies, post-colonialism, and film.Ranked 4th in the UK for linguistics (The Complete University Guide 2023), the course includes a year abroad in your third year for immersion in the language, culture, and society.
