About the course

This four-year integrated master's programme builds on the flexible structure of the BSc Environmental Science, incorporating an additional year for an independent research project and advanced training in research and professional skills. Environmental science is a vital, rapidly evolving discipline that examines Earth's processes, ecosystems, and environments. At Sheffield, one of the earliest programmes in the field, students receive cutting-edge, research-led teaching combining fieldwork and laboratory studies. The curriculum establishes foundations in geography, earth science, and biology, with optional modules allowing specialisation in areas such as global environmental change, conservation, sustainability, and environmental technology.Accredited by the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) and the Committee of Heads of Environmental Sciences (CHES) until 2026, the course integrates field-based learning, independent research, and technical training, culminating in an in-depth final-year project. It offers strong career prospects in industry, research, conservation, and ecology. Benefits include department-covered costs for core field trips (covering travel, accommodation, and food), eligibility for IES student membership towards Chartered Environmentalist status, and opportunities to engage with the vibrant GeogSoc society for social, academic, and career support.
