About the course

This degree offers a profound exploration of the interplay between language, culture, and society, extending across Europe and beyond. Students engage with poetry, prose, theatre, and film in English and other languages, while developing practical skills in one or two modern foreign languages. As a dual honours programme, it splits studies between the School of English and the School of Languages and Cultures, examining the history, literature, and cultural fabric of selected countries. Participants can pursue personal interests through diverse modules, such as animal studies, Gothic history, American literature, and film analysis, while interacting with global texts in English and translation. Advanced language proficiency is achieved, culminating in a third-year abroad opportunity for study, work placement, or volunteering. Why pursue this course? It internationalises your passion for language and literature, fostering a deeper cultural appreciation. As one of few programmes combining English with up to two of ten languages—including German, French, Russian, and Spanish—it enhances literary studies. The curriculum supports professional growth through varied assessments that encourage creativity and inclusivity, while the year abroad immerses you in the language and society of your chosen field.
