About the course

Course summary

Our four year degrees are a one year extension to our BSc degrees which allows further specialisation. In your fourth year you will develop research and analytical skills. You will have the opportunity to contribute to a publication of your research findings and will also take part in a conference style presentation where you present your work.Computer science with AI is the study of machine intelligence, including bio-inspired algorithms, their relationship to living intelligence and the nature of consciousness itself.Position yourself at the leading edge of humanity’s exploration of what it means to be alive, and the creation of artificial intelligence.Beginning with the same foundation as our Computer Science MComp, the degree gives you a grounding in the fundamentals, before encouraging you to specialise in speech recognition, language processing or robotics.Develop AI applications in a team project for an external client in your second year, in your third year specialist modules which cover subjects such as speech and text processing, machine learning and bio-inspired robotics give you scope for creative and intellectual exploration. In your final year you'll continue with this specialised AI theme, you'll get the chance to work alongside our research staff as part of a group research project. And you’ll have the option to participate in Genesys Solutions – our student-led software development organisation – throughout your final year, solving customer’s problems, using agile software engineering and lean startup practice. You'll not only graduate with technical skills of a computer scientist, but also a solid team player, effective communicator and system designer. Why study this course?

  • Research collaboration - our Darwin module lets you engage in a substantial piece of group research, culminating with the possible production of a paper, as well as a final conference-style presentation.
  • Professional skills and group work - professional, communication and presentation skills help to create more employable computer scientists and software engineers.
  • Specialist teaching facilities - you'll have access to the latest hardware, software and operating systems, plus high-spec graphics computers and a robotics arena in our dedicated computer labs in The Diamond.
