About the course

This balanced course enhances your Chinese language proficiency alongside historical knowledge. History modules are tailored to complement Chinese studies, addressing political, social, and cultural themes, while you spend part of your degree immersed in Chinese society through study in China. Through historical analysis, you will build foundational insights into the evolution of Chinese culture, while advancing language skills and engaging in real research from the outset. Develop expertise in historical research, independent judgement, and argumentation. The program includes intensive language training and a year at partner universities in mainland China or Taiwan, allowing practical application of skills. Returning to Sheffield for your final year, you will refine language abilities, explore research-led modules, and complete a supervised dissertation. This degree not only examines China’s past but also equips you to anticipate future developments, offering immersive experiences, specialized seminars, and small-group teaching for in-depth learning.
