Spanish and Portuguese, two of the world's most widely spoken languages, serve as gateways to diverse countries and cultures across Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Our joint honours programme enables students to develop advanced proficiency in both spoken and written forms, complemented by intensive language training and immersion in a rich array of global literature, film, poetry, and theatre, all examined in their historical contexts. Many graduates begin as complete beginners in Portuguese and emerge with strong linguistic skills and essential intercultural competencies.Edinburgh, a vibrant world-leading festival city and capital, offers an exceptional environment for studying these global languages. Unique in Scotland, our four-year honours programme includes a full academic year abroad for all students, whether for study or work. In the first two years, alongside Spanish and Portuguese, students select from a wide range of disciplines, such as electives in other subjects or additional languages like Catalan or Basque. Progression through the honours years focuses on specialisation, equipping graduates with versatile skills for international careers.
