Spanish and Politics, MA (Hons)

Spanish serves as the official language in 20 countries and is widely spoken in additional territories, including the United States, with a rich political history that complements studies in politics. This joint honours programme at Edinburgh combines Spanish and politics, offering expert-led courses on the diverse cultures of Spain, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Students receive intensive language training, including a full year abroad, to develop advanced skills in speaking, writing, reading, and translation, while exploring global literature, film, and theatre in historical contexts. They also gain insights into Spanish varieties and intercultural competencies.In politics, the programme examines the theory and practice of governance, including power dynamics, societal conflicts, and the ethics of political action at local, national, and international levels. Edinburgh's vibrant setting enhances this study, providing flexibility with optional courses in the first two years and specialisation thereafter.
