About the course

Spanish is the official language in 20 countries and widely spoken in four more, including the United States, exerting profound international influence on literature alongside English-speaking cultures for centuries. This four-year joint honours programme in Spanish and English Literature develops critical, analytic, linguistic, and creative skills through engagement with diverse texts and reading approaches. Flexible options allow courses from other schools or languages like Portuguese, Basque, or Catalan. Unique in Scotland, it includes a full academic year abroad for study or work. Based in Edinburgh's UNESCO City of Literature, students explore Spanish cultures of Spain, Latin America, and the Caribbean via intensive training, alongside the UK's oldest English Literature department, covering works from the late Middle Ages to today. Pre-honours years build foundations with electives; Year 3 is abroad, and Year 4 tailors to interests. Benefits include fluency in a major world language, access to exceptional libraries, and creative writing opportunities.
