About the course

This innovative joint honours programme in Scottish Ethnology and English Literature explores human cultural expression across history and the present. Based in Edinburgh, the first UNESCO World City of Literature, it draws on unique resources like the School of Scottish Studies Archives, making it the only full undergraduate offering of its kind in the UK. Ethnology examines Scotland's traditions and societal dynamics through a lens of history and anthropology, addressing how customs, beliefs, and language shape modern identity. English Literature develops critical skills in analysing poetry, drama, and prose from the Middle Ages to today.Students engage with rich archives, including recordings and historical documents, to build practical tools for interpreting culture and media. This flexible programme fosters intercultural competencies, preparing graduates for diverse careers by promoting openness to varied perspectives in a global marketplace.
