This innovative joint honours programme integrates ethnology and English language studies to explore human culture and expression. Ethnology examines the traditions and cultures of developed societies, with a focus on Scotland in a comparative context, offering a unique UK undergraduate offering. Students engage with extensive archives, including thousands of recordings in Scots, Gaelic, English, and extinct dialects, to investigate how customs, beliefs, social organisation, language, music, and history shape modern identities and inform future perspectives.Complementing this, English language studies trace the evolution of English over more than 1,000 years, covering theoretical linguistics, language acquisition, regional variations, and communication methods. The flexible four-year structure allows for optional courses in Years 1 and 2, such as additional languages or world cultures, before specialising. Graduates gain expertise in traditional resources, digital data, and advanced linguistics tools, fostering intercultural competencies.
