About the course

This joint honours programme in Scottish Ethnology and Celtic invites you to explore Scotland’s past and Celtic cultures while developing versatile skills. Study languages, literatures, histories, and traditions, with access to the School of Scottish Studies Archives’ vast recordings in Scots, Gaelic, English, and extinct dialects. Benefit from expert staff, a Traditional Artist, and Gaelic Writer in Residence. The UK’s only full undergraduate ethnology programme focuses on Scotland’s cultural expressions—customs, beliefs, social organisation, music, and language—comparing with other nations to address identity, past-present dynamics, and future shaping.Over four years, pre-honours years introduce Gaelic (from beginner level), Celtic civilisation, oral traditions, and electives across disciplines. Honours years allow specialisation, including advanced Gaelic or medieval languages like Old Irish or Middle Welsh. Unique worldwide, based in Edinburgh, it offers inspiration from musicians and storytellers, world-class libraries, subject flexibility, and related societies.
