The languages, history, politics, and culture of Scandinavian countries have exerted a significant influence beyond the Nordic region. Studying Scandinavian Studies and History fosters a deeper understanding of the contemporary world while illuminating the past. Our flexible joint honours programme allows students to build advanced spoken and written skills in Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish, alongside exploring Scandinavian culture, historical periods, and themes. Combined with interdisciplinary options in Years 1 and 2, this provides a balanced mix of specialised knowledge and intercultural competence, highly valued by global employers. No prior language knowledge is required, as Year 1 courses cater to beginners, with opportunities to compare languages in Year 2.Edinburgh stands out as the only Scottish university—and one of just two in the UK—offering undergraduate honours in Scandinavian Studies. We uniquely integrate a full academic year abroad in Year 3, whether for study or work, enhancing skills for Year 4's advanced translation and writing modules. Our curriculum spans diverse historical themes from the early Middle Ages to the present, across regions like Britain, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, with approaches including political, cultural, social, economic, intellectual, gender, and global history. We also host the Northern Scholars Scheme, promoting collaboration between Nordic, Baltic countries, and Scotland.
