This joint honours programme offers an excellent opportunity to study Russian and Spanish, two of the world's most widely spoken languages, within their global cultural contexts. Together, these languages are used by over 500 million people, with Spanish prominent in Latin America, the Caribbean, and increasingly in the United States and China. No prior knowledge is required; through intensive language training, including a full year abroad, students can develop advanced spoken and written proficiency in both. Alongside language classes, the curriculum explores aspects of Russian- and Spanish-speaking cultures, including literature, film, and theatre, examined in historical, political, and social contexts. Why Edinburgh? As a vibrant festival city and global capital, it provides an ideal setting for cultural language studies. Unique in Scotland, our four-year programme includes a full academic year abroad for study or work placements. The structure is flexible: in Years 1 and 2, students select optional courses from various disciplines alongside core subjects, then specialise in later years based on personal interests and career goals. Graduates emerge with a valuable blend of broad cultural insight and specialised expertise, highly sought after by employers worldwide.
