The Gaelic language forms an essential element of Scotland’s heritage, identity, and cultural landscape, influencing literature, music, art, film, festivals, and education as an official language. Our MA (Hons) in Primary Education with Gaelic (Fluent Speakers) addresses the shortage of Gaelic teachers while building on a 200-year tradition of teacher education. This four-year programme offers a unique full-year placement in a Gaelic-medium primary school, qualification to teach in Gaelic or English, specialised courses on bilingualism and immersion education focused on Scotland, and a £1,000 grant from Bòrd na Gàidhlig. Graduates will contribute to Gaelic’s sustainability and career opportunities in teaching.Edinburgh boasts a vibrant Gaelic community with social groups, performance events like fèisean, and the annual Seachdain na Gàidhlig festival. Students benefit from collaboration between Moray House School of Education and Sport and the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, which leads research through initiatives like Soillse and the Gaelic Algorithmic Research Group. Additionally, access to mental health support via a partnership with Place2Be equips future teachers to promote wellbeing. The programme also provides qualified teacher status for primary level in England and Wales.
