For centuries, Scottish and Portuguese-speaking (Lusophone) cultures have profoundly influenced international literature, with Portuguese ranking among the world's ten most spoken languages alongside English. This joint honours programme cultivates critical, analytical, linguistic, and creative skills through engagement with diverse texts in English, Scots, and Portuguese, while exploring the interplay between literary works and national, international, and imperial cultures. It fosters openness to varied perspectives, essential for global careers. In Portuguese studies, students immerse themselves in literature, film, music, and arts from Portugal, Brazil, and Lusophone Africa, with intensive language training—including a year abroad—developing advanced proficiency. For Scottish Literature, based in Edinburgh—the first UNESCO City of Literature—participants gain skills in close reading of poetry, drama, and prose from the late Middle Ages onward, tailoring honours courses to personal interests. Unique to Scotland, the programme offers a full year abroad, flexible options in early years, and a blend of broad cultural education and specialised knowledge valued by employers worldwide.
