Philosophy has been central to Western intellectual life for over 2,500 years, providing essential skills for systematically addressing profound questions through argument, critical inquiry, rigorous reasoning, and clear expression. At the University of Edinburgh, with its rich history—including alumni like Adam Ferguson and Sir William Hamilton—the philosophy department is one of the largest in the UK. It offers foundational courses in Western philosophy, expanding to diverse topics such as the Philosophy of Well-Being and Feminism, supported by events from the Philosophy Society.Psychology, as an experimental and observational science, examines how individuals perceive, think, and learn; how biological and social factors shape behavior; differences in interests and abilities; communication methods; and changes in mental capacities over time. Through research-led teaching, our courses emphasize skills in research methods and statistical analysis. This joint Philosophy and Psychology programme delivers in-depth knowledge in both fields, allowing specialization in areas of personal interest.
