This joint programme offers comprehensive knowledge in Philosophy and English Literature. In the first two years, students engage with introductory courses across both disciplines, selecting from various options to build a broad foundation. At honours level in years three and four, individuals tailor their studies to specific interests, allowing specialisation in chosen topics. The combination fosters an appreciation for diverse ideas and perspectives, enhancing adaptability in professional and everyday contexts.Philosophy, a cornerstone of Western thought for over 2,500 years, equips students with skills for systematic analysis of profound questions, emphasising argument, critical enquiry, rigorous reasoning, and clear expression. At Edinburgh, with its rich history—including alumni like Adam Ferguson and Sir William Hamilton—the department is one of the UK's largest and hosts prominent speakers. Meanwhile, English Literature, based in the world's first UNESCO City of Literature, provides training in the UK's oldest department, covering global texts, literary analysis, and a wide array of periods, genres, and critical approaches.
