Situated at the intersection of Europe, Africa, and Asia, the Middle East has long been a key player in global history. The University of Edinburgh is renowned in the UK and worldwide for its expertise in Middle Eastern studies, languages, and the Islamic world.Our flexible four-year Master of Arts programme adopts an Area Studies approach, building your knowledge of Middle Eastern history, politics, societies, cultures, and literatures. You will hone skills in analysing and comparing issues through discussions and writing, starting with Year 1 classes in at least one major language—Arabic, Persian, or Turkish. As the programme advances, you can continue languages or explore other subjects, culminating in a final-year dissertation.
