This distinctive joint honours programme offers an opportunity to explore the languages and cultures of two key regions in modern Europe: German-speaking countries and Scandinavia. With over one-third of Europeans speaking German as a first language, and the languages of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden exerting influence far beyond the Nordic area, students engage in intensive language training—including a full year abroad—to develop advanced spoken and written proficiency in German and one Scandinavian language (Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish). No prior language knowledge is required, and alongside classes, participants examine aspects of culture through courses on literature, cinema, history, society, politics, and comparative themes.Edinburgh, as a vibrant world-leading festival city, provides an ideal setting for cultural and linguistic studies. As the only Scottish university—and one of just two in the UK—offering joint honours in Scandinavian Studies, we host the Northern Scholars Scheme to promote collaboration between Nordic, Baltic, and Scottish regions. Our four-year programme uniquely integrates a full academic year abroad, allowing students to tailor courses to their interests, build specialist skills, and gain intercultural competence valued in global careers.
