About the course

For centuries, English and German-speaking cultures have profoundly influenced global literature. Today, German is Europe's most spoken first language and the world's third most popular foreign language. This four-year joint honours programme, including a year abroad, develops critical, analytic, linguistic, and creative skills through diverse texts and approaches in both languages, fostering openness to new perspectives essential for global careers. No prior German knowledge is required; intensive training builds proficiency in reading, listening, writing, translating, speaking, and presenting, alongside exploring German literature, film, and theatre from the 18th century to today. In Edinburgh's oldest English Literature department—one of the world's longest-established—you'll master close reading of poetry, drama, and prose across historical contexts, with honours-level specialization. As a UNESCO World City of Literature, Edinburgh offers exceptional resources like Special Collections and the National Library, enabling fluency, intercultural competence, and options like creative writing. Pre-honours years broaden studies; honours include Year 3 abroad and tailored Year 4 topics.
