This distinctive joint honours programme allows you to explore two contrasting European languages—French and either Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish—within their rich cultural settings. French serves as a global language across Europe, Africa, and the Americas, while the languages of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden have exerted significant influence through literature and media. Over four years, including a year abroad, you will develop advanced spoken and written proficiency in your chosen languages, with no prior knowledge of Scandinavian languages required. Alongside language studies, you will examine aspects of Francophone and Scandinavian culture, including literature, cinema, political history, social movements, and philosophy, while gaining interdisciplinary skills in arts, humanities, and social sciences.Edinburgh, a vibrant festival city and world-leading capital, provides an ideal environment for language immersion. As the only Scottish university offering joint honours in Scandinavian Studies, we host the Northern Scholars Scheme to promote collaboration with Nordic and Baltic nations. Our programme uniquely integrates a full year abroad, enabling you to tailor courses to your interests and enhance employability through specialised skills and intercultural competence for global careers.
