This joint honours programme allows you to study Chinese and Spanish, two major world languages spoken by over two billion native speakers, alongside their histories, literatures, and societies across Europe, Latin and North America, East Asia, and the Caribbean. You will develop advanced competency in Modern Standard Chinese and Spanish, including reading, writing, translation, speaking, and listening skills for social and professional use. Courses cover literature, theatre, cinema, political history, international relations, social movements, and linguistics, with specialist focus on mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and diasporas. Edinburgh, a world-leading festival city, is Scotland's only university offering single and joint Chinese honours with three entry levels (ab initio, upper beginner, intermediate) and two for Spanish; heritage learners welcome, not native speakers. The four-year structure includes Year 3 abroad in China/Taiwan and a Spanish-speaking country, fostering fluency, cultural immersion, research skills, and employability through societies, libraries, and creative opportunities.
