The Bachelor of Optometry (BOptom) is accredited by the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand. This programme develops essential skills in communication, empathy, and problem-solving, with a focus on working with children, the elderly, and those with partial sight. It prepares graduates for registration as optometrists, enabling them to diagnose visual issues, advise on vision loss prevention, and prescribe treatments, while covering both theoretical and clinical aspects for workforce readiness.Entry to the BOptom is limited to 60 places annually and highly competitive, based on academic merit and personal attributes assessed during a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). Applicants can apply via undergraduate pathways from the BSc (Biomedical Science) at the University of Auckland or the Health Sciences First Year at the University of Otago, or through graduate entry. Note that entry criteria may vary yearly, direct applications from secondary school are not accepted, and special schemes exist for domestic students. For further details, consult the BOptom FAQs.
