About the course

Our Department of Law and Criminology has a reputation for high quality research and teaching. Whilst studying law and sociology at Royal Holloway you will explore the fundamental principles of justice, equity and equality within the framework of English and European law. You will also be introduced to the discipline of sociology and will review some of the key debates in sociology. This degree is for anyone looking to start a career in law, whether as a barrister or a solicitor, additionally for those who are interested in the legal system and the ways in which laws are made and upheld along with the study of sociology. You will be equipped with a wide range of transferable skills, including the opportunity to acquire research methods training, which are highly sought after by employers in a wide variety of fields.You will consider the different laws, which apply to different legal problems within the legal system. This will enable to understand how the law regulates agreements between individuals and the relationship between the individual and the state. You can also consider the range of contemporary problems in society with a view to understanding how we understand society. In addition to acquiring invaluable legal skills in research and oral presentation, you can also acquire research methods training. You will also have the opportunity to choose from a range of subjects in fields such as family law, medical law, company law and international law along with sociology options in health and illness, youth in society, children society and risk and drug, crime and society. By electing to spend a year in industry you will also have ample opportunities to integrate theory and practice and gain real world experience.
