About the course

This Single Honours degree in Archaeology examines the human past through humanities and social sciences perspectives, developing broad knowledge and skills via diverse sources, excavations, field trips, and practical work. Students explore all time periods, from human origins to recent centuries, with hands-on experience in archaeological materials and fieldwork, leading to versatile career opportunities in teaching, commercial archaeology, museums, heritage management, and beyond. The programme offers access to world-class facilities, including the 14CHRONO Centre, archaeological labs, and the McClay Library's extensive resources. It includes CIfA-accredited pathways with student membership benefits, plus options for study abroad or placements. Modules cover global archaeology, balancing theoretical and practical skills, while assessments feature coursework, projects, essays, presentations, and exams.

What you will learn

The modules available on this course focus on different periods of World, European and Irish/British archaeology, from human origins to modern times and heritage, allowing students to develop both their theoretical background knowledge and their practical skills in equal measure. Modules in the first year of study are designed to provide students with a broad knowledge base, with second-year modules empathising the development of subject-specific skills, and third-year modules taking you to the cutting edge of research. Students on this course can take optional modules not only from archaeology, but also from other disciplines within the arts and humanities, as well as from a number of science subjects.
