About the course

Our BSc (Hons) Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry degree not only offers a firm grounding in general chemistry, research methods and laboratory techniques, but also provides the specialist skills and understanding you’ll need to pursue a future in pharmaceutical chemistry. We’ve developed the course with the pharmaceutical industry in mind – ensuring that our curriculum covers all the skills and strengths that employers demand, and that our placements offer the practical experience on which you can build a career. You’ll focus on areas like drug testing and efficacy, drug design, including computer-based drug design, drug action mechanisms and the quality control of pharmaceuticals – equipping you for a role in the drug discovery industry. Our medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry degree also provides the option of spending an extra year expanding your horizons, working on a placement in industry.FEATURES AND BENEFITS

  • Over the last two years, we have invested half a million pounds to enhance our undergraduate lab experience and extend our wide range of analytical instrumentation, ensuring that you will benefit from a professional work environment. This includes a high-specification lab area with industry standard equipment and an adjacent computer suite.
  • We are investing £115m to transform the way we teach in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Opening in 2023, our new Dalton building will enhance collaboration between students, staff and industry and provide new and improved teaching spaces, including a 200-student capacity ‘super lab’.
  • Our teaching is supported by a range of technological innovations including videos, specialist software and interactive simulations to help you to prepare for practicals in advance – building your confidence in using lab equipment and allowing you to practise virtually from home.
  • In your first year you will have access to our online homework system, which gives you immediate, targeted feedback and hints to help you understand and practise key concepts.
  • We have embedded career preparation activities into each year of your course to help you explore options, gain key employability skills, and build your confidence to apply for work experience and your future graduate career.
  • You can take the four-year route and boost your career prospects with a 9-12 month placement. This may be subject to availability.
  • Apply for the BSc (Hons) course now and you can choose to move on to the integrated masters degree (MChem) at the end of Year 2. As long as you’re working to a high enough standard you can then switch over to the MChem route.
  • Our diverse research activities directly inform our teaching. These focus on creating a sustainable and healthy future, including biosensors, drug discovery and the chemical monitoring of environmental change.
