Modern Languages, BA (Hons)

Lancaster University’s Modern Languages degree, delivered by the Department of Languages and Cultures, enables students to study three languages, with Chinese, French, German, or Spanish as major options and Italian as a minor. The program includes an international placement year for study or work abroad, offering flexibility in language choices and cultural modules that contextualize the languages.In the first year, students may pursue three advanced languages or two advanced and one beginner, focusing on fluency and cultural contexts. The second year deepens skills and explores political, historical, and cultural aspects through various routes. The third year abroad enhances language proficiency and intercultural awareness, while the fourth year consolidates skills via advanced and comparative modules, with options tailored to language combinations. Beginners are limited to one intensive language.
