Lancaster University’s joint degree in German Studies and Theatre is delivered by the Department of Languages and Cultures in collaboration with the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA). This program equips students with advanced German language skills and a deep understanding of Germany’s historical, cultural, social, and political contexts in a global framework. In Theatre, students engage with innovative 20th- and 21st-century practices through a dynamic mix of practical and academic approaches. The first year explores German language and culture, introduces key theatre concepts via a performance project, and includes a complementary minor subject. In the second year, students build on language skills by delving into German-speaking culture and politics, alongside international modules for a comparative European perspective, combined with LICA options. The third year abroad in a German-speaking country enhances language proficiency and intercultural awareness through study or work placements. The final year consolidates language abilities and focuses on specialized cultural and comparative modules, with LICA choices based on interests. Note that beginning a language at an introductory level is intensive, allowing only one such language, with optional modules limited to higher-level languages or other subjects.
