Linguistics and a Modern Language, BA (Hons)

At the School of English, Communication and Philosophy and the School of Modern Languages, our 4-year BA in Linguistics and a Modern Language aims to develop global citizens with critical thinking, cultural awareness, and transferable skills. Students build advanced communication and analytical abilities through immersive language experiences, gaining a rigorous foundation in linguistics—covering phonetics, morphology, syntax, and topics like sociolinguistics and language acquisition—while choosing from Chinese, French, or Spanish. Two pathways cater to different proficiency levels, emphasizing global contexts, skill development in reading, writing, oral, and listening abilities, and an integrated study of language, culture, and society.A key feature includes spending time abroad for study or work placements, alongside distinctive elements like extracurricular activities, a structured skills program for employability, and opportunities to promote language learning in communities. Graduates leave with academic, linguistic, and practical skills, well-positioned for diverse careers.
