About the course

Are you seeking a fulfilling career in perioperative care, with strong management skills and a commitment to supporting others? Our BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice (ODP) course prepares you to join the theatre team as an essential practitioner. Operating Department Practitioners deliver comprehensive care for diverse patient groups, both in and outside the operating theatre. The programme follows the Modernising Allied Health Professions Career Framework, integrating the Four Pillars of Practice—Clinical Practice (including anaesthetics, surgery, and post-anaesthetic care), Facilitation of Learning, Leadership, and Evidence, Research and Development—across a spiralling curriculum over three years. Upon completion, you can apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to work as an ODP.The course evolves yearly: Year one focuses on academic preparation, self-development, and evidence-based care for elective surgery, supported by clinical placements. Year two emphasises care for complex and emergency cases, leadership principles, and inquiry-based learning. In year three, you advance to autonomous practice, gaining proficiency in anaesthetics, surgery, post-anaesthetic care, and roles like Surgical First Assistant, while exploring special interests and enhancing leadership to manage perioperative resources. This accredited programme ensures industry recognition and professional readiness.
