About the course

Through the skilful manipulation of materials, processes and ideas, artists are able to offer creative insights which shape who we are and how we exist in the world around us. On BA (Hons) Fine Art, you will work with professional artists to develop your own ideas and creative journey, gaining valuable skills that will allow you to flourish in a range of careers across the industries, for example as an artist, curator, teacher or arts coordinator. The ethos and values of BA (Hons) Fine Art are based on a four-pillar structure to emphasise its distinctive features and focuses:

  • Making Skills is a central tenet of the course, facilitating the acquisition of skills through our workshops, studios and by working with fabricators from the industrial city of Birmingham.
  • Making Public will see you explore external-facing engagement opportunities in disseminating outcomes and generating participation with audiences.
  • Making with Communities supports you in considering ways of sustaining meaningful relationships between your art practice and society while growing networks and links with others.
  • Making a Living focuses on creative career routes as you establish a professional context for your work through an understanding of the public and private art sectors in order to position yourself within the creative industries.
Professional Placement YearThis course offers a professional placement year. This allows you to spend a whole year with an employer, between the second and third years of your degree, and is a great way to find out more about your chosen career. Some students even return to the same employers after completing their studies. The University will draw on its extensive network of local, regional and national employers to support you in finding a suitable placement to complement your chosen area of study. If you do not find a suitable placement, you will be automatically transferred back to the standard, non-placement version of the course. Please note that fees are payable during your placement year.
