About the course

The Bachelor of Arts in Arabic Studies, offered by the Department of World Languages and Cultures in the College of Arts and Sciences, requires departmental approval for admission. Language prerequisites may be waived based on prior preparation, with placement determined in consultation with an advisor. Students must complete 120 credit hours with a minimum 2.00 GPA, including university writing and mathematics requirements, and ten general education courses across five foundational areas, ensuring at least one lab science in the natural and mathematical sciences category.The major comprises 36 credit hours with grades of C or better, starting from intermediate language proficiency. Requirements include one of several field concentrations, such as 12 credits in a second language or area studies at the 300-level or above. Core courses encompass 22 credits in advanced Arabic language and civilization, 3 credits in linguistics, a 3-credit senior capstone, and 8 credits of electives in Arabic studies. Opportunities for combined bachelor's and master's degrees are also available through American University.
