About the course

Bioarchaeology provides a vivid reconstruction of the human past. The BSc Bioarchaeology programme integrates scientific methods with the study of history and ancient populations. Based at the University of York, the internationally renowned BioArCh centre—formed by the Departments of Archaeology, Biology, and Chemistry—offers unique expertise in human palaeoecology and environmental archaeology.Students conduct isotopic analysis of archaeological remains to trace origins, migration distances, and ancient diets; analyse proteins in artefacts like Viking-Age hair combs to determine their composition and manufacture; and examine ancient DNA to illuminate human timelines. Our world-leading Archaeology Department fosters a friendly environment where students build close relationships with lecturers. Abundant opportunities include joining the Archaeology Society or participating in overseas research projects, supported by bespoke on-campus facilities.
