Our BA Philosophy programme invites you to explore fundamental concepts of truth, reality, ethics, and societal norms, while critically challenging established perspectives. At the University of Reading, you will develop logical thinking, critical argument evaluation, and the ability to question ideas, guided by leading experts in moral philosophy, mind, and language. The curriculum includes central philosophical principles, texts, and figures, with opportunities to study non-Western traditions like Indian philosophy. This flexible degree allows you to tailor your studies, starting with six modules in the first year—only Reason and Argument is compulsory—and progressing to in-depth topics in years two and three, such as Ethics and Animals or Philosophy of Religion.Teaching occurs in small, interactive seminars that foster discussion, supported by work placements and study abroad options. In the 2023 National Student Survey, 92% of students reported strong support from teaching staff. Core modules include Reason and Argument, The Meaning of Life, Great Works in Philosophy, Oppression, Inequality, and the Enemies of Democracy, and Global Philosophies. Placements offer practical application of skills, though module availability is subject to final approval. For more details, visit the programme page.
