About the course

This programme integrates cutting-edge agricultural science with business and technology advancements, adopting an applied approach at the University of Nottingham. Students learn to apply agricultural principles sustainably to address global challenges, such as feeding a growing population, while developing skills to become future leaders in agribusiness. Activities include delivering presentations to businesses, participating in policy workshops, testing innovative ideas, and receiving instruction from agricultural business experts. Through external visits, guest lectures, and the Agronomy Field Course, participants gain practical insights into UK farming practices and create management plans for real farms at the Sutton Bonington Campus, which features a commercially operated University Farm and Dairy Centre.Key topics encompass agribusiness innovation, food marketing, plant science, animal health, and rural management. Students can opt for additional opportunities like a year-long industry placement or study abroad in locations such as Australia or Canada. The curriculum progresses from first-year explorations of sustainable systems and farm visits, to second-year modules on agribusiness economics and team-based enterprise challenges, culminating in final-year applications of management principles and a research project at a leading agricultural centre.

What you will learn

In your first year you'll look at the key issues affecting agricultural businesses today. You'll study sustainable systems used by commercial UK farms. Visit the University Farm and other local farms to see what you've learnt in practice. You'll learn about the latest developments around the world. Core second year modules cover agribusiness and innovation, economics and agri-marketing. You'll enter our Enterprise Management Challenge. Working in teams you'll manage either a crop or livestock enterprise. You make all the agricultural science and business decisions. You'll observe the impact of your decisions as these are implemented on the farm. In your final year, you'll learn how to apply management principles to modern rural businesses. You'll have farm visits and guest lectures. We invite speakers to give you insights into the management and finance of rural businesses. Your final year research project gives you chance to work at one of the country's top agricultural research centres.
