The majority of Earth's life exists beneath the sea, much of it yet unexplored, with diverse environments like tropical reefs, deep-sea trenches, seagrass meadows, and polar seas interconnected within a single vast ocean. Our BSc Marine Biology course at Essex immerses students in this dynamic world from the outset, guided by internationally renowned staff whose research spans coral reef conservation, fisheries management, animal behaviour, marine biotechnology, and microbiology. Alongside these topics, essential scientific skills such as data analysis, literature research, and presentation are developed to build a strong foundation for careers in science.Students gain hands-on experience through practical laboratory work in our STEM Centre and fieldwork in local estuaries, including Essex salt marshes, collaborating with organizations like the Essex Wildlife Trust and Environment Agency. Opportunities for trips to Scotland, Greece, and Indonesia allow application of knowledge, including diving and underwater research in the Coral Triangle. After core modules, advanced, research-driven topics are explored, culminating in an independent project on areas like oyster fisheries or sea turtle ecology, fostering personalized interests. Many courses offer optional modules for tailored learning, with details available on the University of Essex website.
