About the course

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of philosophical and legal topics. Philosophy modules introduce key areas of the discipline, while legal modules examine core aspects of common law, including contract, tort, and crime, as well as the relationship between citizens and the state through public law. The program delivers rigorous training in both fields, enhancing critical, analytical, and argumentative abilities. Students learn to apply philosophical methods to legal challenges and gain insight into the ethical dimensions of law, emerging with advanced skills in critical thinking and analysis.Optional topics may include legal ethics and justice, human rights, law and literature, ethics, and political philosophy. At Essex, we specialize in commercial, public, and human rights law, with rankings of 51st globally and 13th in the UK for law (THE World University Rankings 2021), and top 20 in the UK for research excellence in both law and philosophy (REF 2014). Many courses feature optional modules for personalized study, with further details available on the University of Essex website.
