About the course

Chemistry, often called the "central science," provides profound insights into the world and gains even greater power when integrated with computer technology and data science. The BSc Chemistry with Computing program equips students with essential skills in both disciplines, preparing them for modern laboratory demands. Through technological advancements, computation now plays a pivotal role in chemical research and industry, enabling applications like materials design, in-silico drug development, and large-scale data analysis. Students learn from experts in Chemistry and Computer Science, utilizing state-of-the-art facilities in STEMLab and computer labs, while studying organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry alongside practical skills and, from the second year, computer programming. The program offers strong support through pastoral care, peer mentoring, and insights from active researchers. Assessment includes exams and coursework such as laboratory reports, presentations, and dissertations, with the final BSc classification based on a weighted average from Years 2 and 3. For those pursuing advanced paths, the MChem degree extends to four or five years, ideal for PhD studies or industrial research, compared to the BSc's focus on immediate employment in scientific sectors.
