About the course

Our BA in Music and a Modern Language is a four-year programme that integrates language studies with creative and practical music skills, preparing graduates for diverse career opportunities. At the Schools of Music and Modern Languages, we aim to cultivate global citizens who think critically, appreciate cultural diversity, and possess transferable skills. Students develop advanced communication and critical-thinking abilities through immersive language experiences, while engaging in musicianship studies. Choose from Chinese, French, or Spanish, following either an Upper Elementary pathway for those with prior knowledge or an Elementary one for beginners. The curriculum explores language in its social, political, historical, and cultural contexts, enhancing reading, writing, oral, listening, and mediation skills. In Cardiff's vibrant arts scene, students benefit from partnerships with organisations like the Welsh National Opera and access to ensembles such as the Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble.A key component is a year abroad, studying at a partner university or undertaking a work placement to immerse in the target culture. Distinctive features include learning from native speakers via blended digital methods, participating in extra-curricular events like language cafés, and gaining employability through credit-bearing placements with music professionals. Fully funded instrumental tuition and opportunities for composition workshops further enrich musical development, linking language, culture, and society seamlessly.
