About the course

Naval architects and marine engineers work with the world's most powerful vehicles and largest moving structures. The Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering program at Strathclyde stands out as it ranks first in Europe and third globally for Marine/Ocean Engineering (Shanghai Ranking's Academic Ranking of World Universities 2022). Students gain practical skills to address engineering challenges on various marine vehicles, with access to advanced facilities like towing/wave tanks, engine labs, virtual reality labs, and a full mission ship bridge simulator. Additional opportunities include training on a 33-foot racing yacht, international work placements, sponsorships, scholarships, and professional accreditation from the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology.Career prospects in this field include roles in ship and offshore design, technical consultancy, ship safety, and operations management. Recent graduates have secured positions such as naval architect, ship surveyor, marine engineer, project engineer, and class surveyor. Note that this course does not award qualified teacher status (QTS), which is required for teaching in state schools in England or Wales.
