Our Modern Languages with Business degree is tailored for those interested in languages for business environments, providing insights into the history, politics, and cultures of relevant countries. It develops essential skills for global careers, with three-quarters of the program focused on studying one or two languages to degree level, alongside cultural and historical knowledge, while the remaining quarter covers fundamental business principles such as organisational studies, society, and governance. The program includes a year abroad to enhance communication skills through options like teaching English, studying at partner universities, or working in language-speaking countries. Language choices include: one language from beginners' level (German, Russian, or Spanish); post-A level (French, German, Russian, or Spanish); or two languages (e.g., French, German, Mandarin), with only one at beginners' level. The curriculum progresses from foundational modules in year one to advanced topics in years two and four, with the third year spent abroad.
In year one you begin a structured language course in the language or languages of your choice. You are also introduced to the history and culture related to your language(s). A quarter of your studies will be in core business studies modules: Organisational Studies; Environment, Society and Governance; and Work and Society. In year two, as well as continuing to develop your language skills, you choose topics from a wide range of options in the fields of literature, history, society and culture of the countries where your language or languages are spoken. You will also take optional modules in business. Your will spend your third academic year abroad. You will divide your time between countries where your chosen language(s) are spoken. Depending on where your placement is, you could study at one of our exchange universities, teach on the British Council assistantship programme or undertake a work placement with a company. Your fourth year will be spent back at Nottingham. As well as continuing to develop your language skills, you will choose special topics from a wide range of options in the fields of literature, history, society, and culture of the countries where your language(s) are spoken.
