In our combined honours programme, you will explore two complementary subjects. The English component offers an engaging study of Anglophone literatures, from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, examining works in their historical contexts and the emergence of literary forms like the novel. Modules encompass a broad array of media, including plays, novels, poetry, short stories, and modern forms such as comics, film, television, and digital culture. You will engage with writers from Britain, Ireland, the United States, Africa, Asia, and beyond, while drawing on diverse approaches like creative writing (poetry, prose, screenplays), creative industries (publishing, museum studies, theatre, and film), and critical theory, ensuring a rich and varied academic experience. The History component at the University of Exeter equips you with essential skills for in-depth historical exploration. In the first year, you build a strong foundation in knowledge and methods, progressing to independent research in the second year and specialised study in the final year. With extensive module options, you can investigate periods from the Roman Empire to the present and global regions, covering topics such as migration, indigenous peoples in Latin America, health politics, women's roles, the Vikings, magic in early modern Europe, and material culture histories, for a personalised and immersive learning journey.
