About the course

This four-year course immerses students in Chinese and Japanese languages from beginner level, complemented by modules on Chinese society, including history, culture, politics, anthropology, geography, sociology, media, business, and urban studies. You'll develop a critical understanding of China's global influence while advancing language skills, with opportunities to explore Japanese and East Asian societies through optional modules. A year abroad at partner universities in mainland China or Taiwan provides hands-on experience and practical application of your learning. In your final year, refine language proficiency through research-led modules and the option to complete a dissertation under expert supervision. Supported by experienced staff, the program is ranked first in the UK for Asian studies in the 2023 National Student Survey, offering strong career preparation in East Asia-related fields through skills development and employability focus.
