Structural engineering and architecture collaborate to shape the built environment, influencing design, construction, materials, and aesthetics. This interdisciplinary programme, offered jointly with the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA) at the Edinburgh College of Art, provides comprehensive training in structural engineering while fostering a deep understanding of architectural contexts. It prepares students for sustainable building design and professional licensure, with Year 1 featuring approximately half the curriculum in architecture classes. Students build on core engineering principles, applying scientific knowledge and tools to infrastructure projects, and can focus on architectural elements in later years or final projects. The programme emphasises expertise in sustainable materials, design methods, and the environmental impact of construction. At the University of Edinburgh, students learn from leading experts whose insights are valued globally in engineering. The curriculum offers a broad grasp of civil and environmental engineering through field trips, team-based teaching, and industry collaboration. World-class facilities and active student societies, such as CivSoc, enhance learning and networking in areas like hyperloop technology and rocketry. Strong industry ties, via an Industrial Advisory Board and internship opportunities, including the Edinburgh Award, connect students with professionals and recent graduates for career development.
